Times Staff Report

MOMENCE | A 5-year-old Villa Park girl who disappeared two days ago while boating in the Kankakee River walked up to searchers on Friday, hours after her grandfather's body was pulled from the water.

Hannah Klamecki is alive and paramedics are checking on her condition, said Kankakee County Undersheriff Brad O'Keefe.

The Villa Park girl was found about 10:20 a.m., several hours after searchers pulled the body of her 62-year-old grandfather from the water.

"She was in great shape and in good spirits," Kankakee County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Ken McCabe told The Times. "I walked up and said 'How are you.' She was a little dirty, but there were no real signs of any injuries."

A news conference is scheduled for this afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Momence Fire Department.

Searchers found the body of David Klamecki, 62, of Momence, in the water near a small island.

The body "was found floating in the river near where the boat was, which leads us to believe it was caught in a logjam and just got released by the current," O'Keefe said.

Hannah Klamecki told searchers her grandfather had gone swimming, O'Keefe said.

The two were last seen on the river near Momence at about 7 p.m. Wednesday. The sheriff's office was notified they were missing at about 11 p.m.

Sonar equipment was used in the search that had been suspended at nightfall Thursday. Authorities have said that the river near the island drops suddenly from a few inches to 13 feet deep.

A number of agencies helped with the search, including Lake County, Ind., which sent a helicopter and about 22 people over the past three days to help with the seach.

"Within the last hour, she came walking out of the woods," said Hank Woronka of the Lake County Sheriff's Department. "Most everyone in the search has reason to believe in miracles still."

Also helping with the search was the Momence Fire Department, the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Conservation, as well as the Kankakee County sheriff's river patrol unit.
