GARY | Police arrested six people Wednesday in raids of three businesses accused of bootlegging music, movies and name-brand athletic shoes.

Officers packed car trunks and trailers full of suspected counterfeit tennis shoes and illegally copied music and movies Wednesday.

Representatives from the music industry and Nike shoes accompanied officers in searches at More 4 Less/Shoes for Less, a discount store at 1029 Broadway; Westside Food, a grocery store on West 15th Street; and Super Value Foods on West 25th Street.

Police - who had been working with officials from Nike and the Recording Industry Association of America on the investigation - said they arrested Arthur Baker, of Gary; Bassam Abdulla, of Crown Point; Osama Abdulla, of Schererville; Nabil Abdulla, of Crown Point; Kamal Subeh, of Schererville, and Ahmad Musleh, of Orland Park, Ill.

Charges of misdemeanor conversion are pending in Lake Criminal Court, police said.

Officers confiscated approximately 2,200 CDs, 3,800 DVDs and more than 600 pairs of counterfeit Nike shoes, an investigator in the case said.

After the items were taken, the shops were reopened.

Among the loot collected were boxes of copied CDs as well as movies currently in theaters, including "Revolutionary Road," "Notorious," and "Taken," which is scheduled to hit theaters Friday.

Alleged bootlegging is a problem existing in other Northwest Indiana communities outside of Gary. Hammond police, too, have been battling pirated entertainment for years, Hammond Chief Brian Miller said.

Hammond police often receive calls concerning people trying to peddle illegal CDs and DVDs outside of local gas stations, Miller said.
