WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP | A crane collapsed on the grounds of Washington Township schools Tuesday evening, apparently resulting in no injuries.
The crane was working on a communications tower on the north end of the school property when its top section failed just before dark, eyewitness Russell Shirley said.
Shirley, who was on his back deck about a half mile away, said the crane was removing a radio array from the tower.
"That top section just buckled," Shirley said.
The crane fell on a security fence surrounding the tower and a portable baseball batting cage. The tower is just northwest of the school's baseball diamond.
Porter County Sheriff's deputies and the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene, Shirley said.
A spokesperson for National Crane, of Bluffton, Ind., which owns the crane, said the company did not know who was renting the crane at the time and had no comment on the incident.
