Woman gets 3 years for scalding son
Lake Criminal Court Judge Salvador Vasquez sentenced Robin D. Shields, 30, to three years in prison. The Lake County prosecutor's office said she pleaded guilty last month to a child neglect charge arising from an incident March 29 in her East Chicago home.
Police said she forced her then 5-year-old son to sit in a bathtub of scalding water after he soiled his pants. She later took him to St. Catherine Hospital, where the boy was treated for burns that required him to undergo skin grafts, painful treatment, rehabilitation to learn to walk again and counseling.
