Inmate who climbed out window found within 15 minutes
CROWN POINT | A man housed in Lake County Community Corrections escaped by climbing out a second-story window Saturday, but was caught by police within 15 minutes.
After climbing out the window of the former Parramore Hospital building about noon, William Andrew Parks Jr., 48, of Indianapolis, was seen running west from the building into a wooded area, Lake County Sgt. Anthony Ramirez said.
Eight officers, including a Merrillville canine unit, set up a perimeter and began to search for Parks, whom the dog found hiding under a pile of weeds, Ramirez said.
He said police records show that Parks was sent to Community Corrections by the Indiana Department of Correction for overcrowding, but when asked, Parks said he was there because he was a federal inmate.
After Parks was taken into custody, officers went back to Parks' hiding spot to check the area and found a Bible bag containing a large sum of money. Ramirez said Parks also had a large amount of money in his wallet.
He said there may be a connection between Parks and a bank robbery in East Chicago on Thursday.
Ramirez said he asked for a county helicopter to help with the search, but Parks was found about 15 minutes after his escape so Ramirez said the helicopter was not used. He attributed Parks' quick apprehension to the fact that many off-duty officers were able to respond quickly in their take-home cars.
