Gary man charged with striking father with car

Jawaun Woods, 20, was charged Thursday with felony attempted murder, aggravated battery and battery after running over the man he believes is his father with a car, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Lake Criminal Court.

The Gary resident started arguing with the victim, got in the driver's seat of a car and hit him, the affidavit says. The man rolled over the hood and hit the windshield, records say.

Woods told the man he was lucky Woods didn't have his gun, records say.

IDEM offering pollution prevention grant money

Communities, schools and businesses wanting to help the environment can apply for state grants by Aug. 29.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is offering grants for programs that help reduce negative impacts on the environment.

The grants require a 50 percent match, and IDEM matching grant funds of up to $250,000 are available.

Women and minority business enterprises, small businesses, Indiana Environmental Stewardship Program members and Indiana CLEAN Community Challenge participants may qualify for a match of less than 50 percent.

Past grant winners have purchased reusable bags for local grocery stores and replaced toxic paint with water-based paint.
