Man reports 3 dogs worth $1,350 stolen

CHESTERTON | A Chesterton man told police his beagle and his son's two Walker hounds, which look like large beagles, were stolen Wednesday from the son's property on Crocker Street.

The victims are Thomas Walstra II, of Tower Street, and Thomas Walstra III, of Crocker Street. The beagle is worth $150 and the hounds are worth $1,200 total.

Cops: Man stole golf cart and motorcycle

PORTER | A Porter man has been charged with two counts of theft after Porter police Detective Mike Veal said an investigation showed the man stole a golf cart and a motorcycle in March.

Trae Christenson, 21, of 204 Wagner Road, Porter, was charged with the theft of a $7,500 Chicago Cubs golf cart from Wagner Road resident David Ailes and a motorcycle from Michigami Trail resident Mary Lemons.

Police said Christenson and another person took the items to Illinois to sell.

Cops arrest man on 7 criminal charges

PORTAGE | A Portage man was arrested on seven criminal charges following a physical disturbance at 9 p.m. Wednesday at his apartment.

Robert Zemlik, 41, of 2573 Parkview St., Apt. 4, was arrested on three counts of battery and one count each of strangulation, residential entry, criminal recklessness and criminal confinement.

Another theft from health club reported

CHESTERTON | A second person has reported having items stolen from a locker at Duneland Health & Wellness Institute in Chesterton.

Porter resident Nancy Cowgill, who works and exercises at the facility, told police Wednesday that someone stole $40 cash and a credit card from the wallet in her locker. The card was used at three Valparaiso businesses.

Wanatah resident Kelly Teeple told police Tuesday someone stole $70 cash and a debit card from her locker.

Police reports state the lockers are secured by user-programmable four-digit touchpads.

Police say homeless man caught stealing

SOUTH HAVEN | A homeless man was arrested on theft and trespassing charges after police said he was caught stealing coins, a radar detector and DVDs from a car parked outside Al's Supermarket, 392 W. U.S. 6.

Richard Stephen, 56, is accused of stealing from the car of Hobart resident Casey Atwood at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Atwood told police he returned from shopping to find a man inside his car. Atwood told police the man fled northbound across U.S. 6, but he followed him to a mobile home at 35 Harmony.

Police found Stephen lying on a bed inside a shed at that location. Police said they recovered the coins and radar detector, but Stephen must have dropped the movies.

Footprints could be from a peeping Tom

CHESTERTON | A woman who lives on South 14th Street told police Wednesday that her daughter discovered footprints in the new snow around their home.

The woman told police she believes it is related to the ongoing problems they have with someone looking in their windows.

DNA leads to charge in year-old burglary

A year after County Road 1100 North resident Bonnie Crowder's home was burglarized, police have used DNA testing to charge her brother with the burglary.

James Stanley, 35, address unknown, was charged Tuesday with one count of burglary. Porter County police said Stanley was a suspect and they were able to charge him after lab testing showed blood left at the scene belonged to him.
