LIBRARY REOPENS | Hobart

Lake County Public Library's Hobart branch, 100 N. Main St., will re-open to the public Oct. 2 for use of the first floor. The lower level meeting rooms and GED room will remain closed due to flood damage. With the re-opening of the Hobart branch, the Lake Station-New Chicago Branch will return to its normal operating hours. Beginning Oct. 6, the new location for the Hobart GED program will be the First United Methodist Church, 654 E. Fourth St. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays. New students can register on Wednesdays only from 3 to 5. Questions about GED should be directed to Portage Adult Education Center at (219) 762-6113.

HOMECOMING WEEKEND | St. John

Lake Central Baseball Stadium Club's Annual Chicken Dinner will take place from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 3 in the Lake Central High School cafeteria. No tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets are available at LCHS Athletic or Main Offices, or from any LC baseball player, for $12. Carry-outs are available.

GOLF OUTING | Crete

Lake Central Baseball Stadium Club will host its Inaugural Golf Outing on Oct. 4 at Lincoln Oaks Golf Course in Crete. Registration is at 9:30 a.m., followed by an 18-hole scramble shotgun start at 10:30. Entry fee is $90 for golf, use of cart, range, dinner, gifts and prizes. Dinner for non-golfers is $20. Hole sponsorships are available for $100.

FALL BOOK SALE | Merrillville

Friends of the Lake County Library are hosting the Annual Fall Book Sale, offering more than 10,000 adult and children's books, DVDs, Videos, CDs, audio-cassettes, vinyl records, magazines, puzzles, and rare books, from 4 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 3 and 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. U.S. 30. The Preview Sale for members of Friends (membership can be obtained at the door for $5) will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 2.

GENEALOGY SEARCHING | Cedar Lake

Discover the amount of information available on the Internet for tracing ancestors and learn how to use the library's Ancestry Library, Heritage Quest, and Pro-Quest Obituaries databases at 2 or 6:30 p.m. today at the Lake County Public Library's Cedar Lake branch, 10010 W. 133rd Ave. Every participant will have a computer and time to do some online research, so bring whatever genealogy information available. WRITING GRANTS | Crown Point

A two-day Beginner's Guide to Grant Writing workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 16 and Nov. 20 at the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service office, 880 E. 99th Court. Develop a proposal outline and learn of all the resources necessary to complete it at the first session, then return with a full proposal and become a reviewer, learn strategies for finding funding and polish your proposal. STORY TIME | Cedar Lake

SAFETY VILLAGE | Schererville

Tri Town Safety Village will host its annual Open House and Fire Prevention Week event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 4 at 1350 Eagle Ridge Drive. Many children's activities are planned. Safety Village is a nonprofit agency in Schererville that operates with the help of three towns, St. John, Dyer and Schererville. The village teaches area children fire, police, road and railroad safety.

JUNIOR MISS | Cedar Lake

Cedar Lake will host the community's 33rd annual Cedar Lake Junior Miss Program on Oct. 5 at Hanover Central High School's Auditorium. This scholastic program offers high school senior girls an opportunity to earn scholarship funds for college. The girls are judged in the areas of fitness, poise, talent, judge's interview, and scholastic achievement. The girls enjoy working together to develop a fitness and poise routine for the program. They are also treated to a variety of events through the five weeks of the program.

HUB CITY 500 | Crown Point

The second Hub City 500, a tricycle race for all ages, will begin at 9 a.m. Oct. 11 at the parks office, 1313 E. North St. There are divisions for ages 4 to 13 and ages 14 and older. Entry fee is $5 for residents and $15 for nonresidents. Register by Oct. 3.

Tri Town Safety Village and Northwoods Restaurant will hold the first Family Octoberfest from 1 to 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at the restaurant, 8101 U.S. 41. Fun activities are planned for the kids while live music will entertain the adults. CHECK THE SKY | Lowell

Calumet Astronomical Society hosts free public stargazing outing from 8 to 11 p.m. Oct. 3 and 4 at the Conway Observatory, 19000 Chase St., southeast of Buckley Homestead County Park. Volunteers will guide visitors in the use of telescopes and astronomical binoculars to observe the majesty of the skies. Programs are dependent on cloud cover and weather conditions. Turn south from Ind. 2 on Hendricks St. to Belshaw Road, then turn left (east) to the first right turn, Chase St., and go one mile south. Dress for outdoor weather. Standard flashlights are prohibited.

HUNGER BANQUET | East Chicago

The 16th annual Mothers Against Hunger banquet, sponsored by the four Circles of Serbian Sisters of Northwest Indiana, will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 5 at St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, 4021 Elm St. The other three participating churches are St. George of Schererville, St. Sava of Merrillville and St. Elijah of Crown Point.
