VALPARAISO | Valparaiso's Parks Director Steven Doniger has announced his resignation to take a new job in Madison, Wis. His resignation is effective Feb. 6.

"Steve's contributions to our city have been extraordinary and we're grateful for his leadership," said Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas in a written statement. "While he will leave behind big shoes to fill, he has succeeded in building an outstanding department that will continue to attract talented candidates."

Doniger started work at the Parks Department in 1995 as the youth recreation director. He has served as director since 2004.

According to the mayor's office, Doniger will serve as Parks Community Services Manager for the city of Madison -- a parks system that includes more than 6,000 acres of park land.

"It has been my pleasure to serve the citizens and guests of the Valparaiso community," said Doniger in a press release. "Valparaiso is a community of vision, constructed through the inspiration of all residents. I will forever treasure the friendships I have gained throughout the years here and I will take the best experiences of the city and park system with me."
