Collection of household waste scheduled Friday

Residents can safely get rid of unwanted hazardous household materials from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Hammond Recycling Center, 601 Conkey St.

Motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline, kerosene, oil-based paints, batteries, pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, aerosols, mercury and mercury-containing devices, such as thermometers, thermostats and fluorescent lights, will be accepted, as well as old medications, needles and ammunition.

Just about anything labeled poison, danger, flammable, toxic, corrosive, or caution can be dropped off for appropriate disposal.

HOBART

Senior discounts may apply to garbage fees

A discount application for the city of Hobart garage collection fees for those 65 and older can be completed in the Hobart clerk-treasurer's office, 414 Main St.

Residents may qualify for the reduced monthly fee by providing proof of ownership and residency of a property and proof of age.

A valid state of Indiana ID or driver's license is required.

A form also can be printed off the city's Web site at www.city.hobart.in.us under administration clerk-treasurer forms.

Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Woodmar liquor store loses $1,000 in break-in

Debris from an on-going street repair project was used to smash the window of a Woodmar package store after which numerous bottles of liquor were taken, police said.

A brick was found Thursday morning inside Nick's Liquors in the 6900 block of Indianapolis Boulevard. The store's manager said damage to the window and several bottles on display was $800.

Someone then reached through the opening and took another 20 bottles of various brands of vodka worth $320, the manager reported.

Detectives on Friday were reviewing surveillance video from a nearby filling station for possible images of the break-in.

City-Wide Crime Watch set to meet Wednesday

The Hammond City-Wide Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hammond Police Department Sector 7 Office, located at 6820 McCook Ave. next to Van Til's on 169th Street.

Facilitating the meeting will be police Community Affairs Officer Scott Holbrook and Ken Baker, president of the City-Wide Crime Watch.

Hessville Crime Watch changes meeting date

The Hessville Neighborhood Crime Watch will meet at 7:30 Thursday at the Jean Shepherd Community Center, 3031 J.F. Mahoney Drive.

The meeting was delayed by one week because of the unavailability of the Jean Shepherd center.

The group typically meets the third Thursday of the month.

HAMMOND

Redevelopment panel topics include levee work

Tuesday's Redevelopment Commission meeting will include approval of city easements in connection with the federal levee project overseen by the Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission.

The commission also will address participation in the landscape project involving the median at the far north end of Indianapolis Boulevard.

The regular meeting begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday in City Council chambers at City Hall, 5925 Calumet Ave. A closed executive session will precede the regular meeting at 4:30 p.m.
