CROWN POINT | About once a week, the Crown Point High School principal says he gets a call from a concerned parent regarding the MySpace.com Internet service.

MySpace.com is an Internet site where millions of people -- teens and adults -- hang out to meet people or network, posting and exchanging personal information.

Principal Ryan Pitcock said sometimes the messages have inappropriate content. But it's not something that he or the school district monitors. Nor can students access MySpace.com from the school.

Still, when Pitcock receives calls from concerned parents, he often will view the specific pages.

"In most cases, I speak to the student and parent about the information posted for everyone to see and of my concerns," he said.

He characterized the inappropriate information as either related to illegal substances or suggestive material. While Pitcock said he has not had any complaints regarding threatening material on the site, he knows it is an issue with which other schools have dealt.

Pitcock said parents of students involved in questionable MySpace content generally appreciate hearing about the material before it becomes damaging.

Parent Suzanne VanCleef said parents, not the schools, are responsible for monitoring what students do on MySpace.

She said she thinks it's important for parents to look at the blog every now and then. She said both her children have MySpace pages.

"We have the ability to look at it any time, but I like to be up front with them. It's sort of like a freedom of speech issue," VanCleef said.
