Youth jobs | Lansing
The Lansing Youth Center youth job referral program connects seniors who need help with mowing, yard work and odd jobs with youth looking for part-time work. Youths must live in Lansing and be between 13 and 16 years old. Applications are available at the Youth Center or at the Village Clerk's Office. Applicants' names, ages and phone numbers will be sent to Lansing seniors who request summer help. Lansing seniors can contact the Youth Center for a list of available workers. The program requires the youth and the resident arrange work and payment details.

Information session | Chicago
Representatives from Governors State University will host an information session for certified teachers interested in earning a master of arts in educational administration. University representatives will provide information on the cohort program with coursework leading to a Type 75 certificate at 4:30 p.m. May 14 in the Pulaski Fine Arts Academy, 2230 W. McLean Ave. This cohort program requires two years to complete and is open to certified teachers with two years experience. A minimum of 25 participants is needed to begin the program.

Discount tickets | Calumet City
The Calumet Memorial Park District is selling discount tickets to Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor. Purchase an adult ticket for $35, a child's ticket for $29, or a two-day pass for $52. Tickets may be purchased at the Memorial Park Fieldhouse, 612 Wentworth Ave. Availability is limited. Only cash can be accepted as payment.

Republic Steel | Chicago

Community garage sale | Lynwood
A community garage sale is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 17 at Liberty Park, Glenwood-Dyer Road behind Lynwood Fire Station. There is a $6 fee per space, which does not include tables or chairs. The fees will be collected the day of the sale. Only Lynwood residents may sell items. A bake sale will be held in conjunction with the event. The public is welcome to attend the sale.

Open house | Chicago Heights
Paws Critter Crossing will have its 11th annual open house from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 17 at 20227 Stony Island Ave. The nonprofit volunteer organization was established to rehabilitate, release and provide care, refuge and education for wildlife. The open house will include flower sale, raffle, face painting, children's games, and a chance to see new babies. All proceeds benefit the animals 100 percent.

Summer soccer for ages 4 to 13 will begin practices the week of May 19 through Calumet Memorial Park District. The fee is $20 for residents, $25 for nonresidents, and includes a team shirt. Games will be played as part of the Southeast Suburban Soccer League. Registration is now being taken at the Memorial Park Recreation Office.

Autism support Frankfort, Ill.
A support group called I-CARE in Illinois is hosting an introductory and overview conference on ABA intervention for autism. The presenter is Robert Schramm, who wrote the book "Educate Toward Recovery: Turning the Tables on Autism." The two-day conference is May 30 and 31 at the Pioneer Grove Educational Center, 601 Willow St. Last day to register is May 23.

Firefighter cook-off | Merrionette Park, Ill.
Big Event 2008 is from 5 to 9 p.m. May 17 at 115 Bourbon Street, 3359 W. 115th St. Firefighters will compete in an annual cook-off in one or more categories including ribs, chicken, ethnic and chili. Along with celebrity judges, the event attendees will have a say in the winner. The event features chefs from throughout Chicago and Indiana. Other activities will include live band performance, face painting for children and a raffle and auction. Proceeds will benefit Sertoma Centre, which is based in Alsip and helps individuals with disabilities. A $10 entry fee includes 10 food sample tickets.

'GREASE' AUDITIONS | Highland
Highland Parks Performing Arts Group will hold open auditions for its summer musical, "Grease," from 6:30 to 9 p.m. May 19 and 20 at Lincoln Center, 2450 Lincoln St. Bring a short song with sheet music (an accompanist will be provided) and be dressed for a short dance audition. There are roles for four adults and about 30 high school-age performers. The group also needs tech and stage help. Performances are July 31 through Aug. 9. The director is Dale Kelley.

Northern Indiana Storm Cheer and Dance Association holds its seventh season registration for cheerleaders and lift men 5 to 19 years old from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 17 and 24 at St. John Township Center, 1515 W. Lincoln Highway. A discount is given for May signups. The nonprofit program, part of the nationwide Amateur Athletics Union, draws youths from St. John, Schererville, Dyer, Crown Point, Griffith and Highland.

PARISH DANCE | Munster
Our Lady of Grace Parish of Highland honors its parishioners and alumni with a Mass and dinner dance May 24. Mass is at 4:30 p.m. and dinner and dancing will be at 6 p.m. at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road. Tickets cost $40 per person and may be bought at the school office. Our Lady of Grace is especially honoring the class of 1958 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of graduation from school. In addition, the classes of 1968, 1978, 1988, and 1998 will be celebrated.
