For a third day, a search of the Lake Michigan shoreline failed to turn up 14-year-old DaVante Jackson, of Chicago Heights, who disappeared Sunday in rough waters at Kemil Beach near Beverly Shores.
On Tuesday, the search expanded to about 5 or 6 square miles east and west from the spot where DaVante last was seen, said Gene Davis, a conservation officer with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
Davis said three different shifts of two-man crews on a boat searched the water's surface. At the same time, others on four-wheelers canvassed the beach. Tuesday's efforts, involving DNR officers and the Portage Fire Department, were expected to go until 9:30 or 10 p.m.
Davis was hopeful the search would wrap up in a day or so, since warmer lake temperatures would bring a body closer to the surface.
DaVante was one of 11 people who went to Indiana Dunes State Park on Sunday. When it was closed to swimming due to the strong rip currents, the group went east to Kemil Beach, which is unguarded.
Friends of DaVante said he and two others began having problems because of the strong currents. Friends pulled two of the swimmers to safety, but DaVante, who was farther out, disappeared below the 2- to 3-foot waves before he could be reached.
DaVante's mother, Chanell Davis, said her son is a good child and earned A's and B's at Washington School, where he recently finished eighth grade. He hoped to participate in cross country, football and wrestling at Bloom High School in Chicago Heights.
