ICE CREAM SOCIAL | Crown Point

Friends of the Crown Point Community Library will host an Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social from 2 to 4 p.m. July 27 to celebrate the library's 100 years of service. The event will be held in the parking lot of the Crown Point Community Library, 214 S. Court St., and admission is free. Musical entertainment will be provided by Art Handley & Friends.

THRESHING DAY | Lowell

"What Real Men and Women Are Made Of" is the theme of Threshing Day from noon to 4 p.m. July 27 at Buckley Homestead County Park, 3606 Belshaw Road. Men and women are invited to join in the Threshing Day work. There was generally only one thresher in an area and all worked together to harvest each farmer's grain. After completing this arduous task, at noon, the farmers were rewarded with a threshing meal cooked by the wives. While the men folk are in the field helping, women folk may visit the ladies in the buildings and assist with the evening meal.

MOVIE TIME | Crown Point

Join the Crown Point Parks and Recreation Department for a free 55 & Better afternoon movie screening of the film "National Treasure" at 1 p.m. July 24 at the Civic Center, 101 S. East St. Popcorn and beverages will be served.

TUBIN' TUESDAYS | Merrillville

Tubin' Tuesdays will be held from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Aug. 12 at Deep River Waterpark, 9001 E. U.S. 30. Cost is $11 for adults or $7 for youths 46" and shorter and senior citizens 61 and older. No other discounts accepted. Disc jockey plays music all evening.

CLOCK TOWER CONCERTS | Hobart

Hobart Arts League is hosting Events Under the Clock Tower at 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Aug. 26 at Third and Main streets downtown. The July 22 performance will feature The Velvet Touch and the July 29 show stars Terry Klema.

North St. Open to all ages, participants will be tie dying T-shirts in multicolored dyes. Bring just one T-shirt; all other supplies will be provided. INSECT-O-MANIA | Cedar Lake

All ages will enjoy a puppet show, songs, and other activities about a variety of buggy friends at the Insect-O-Mania Family Story Time event at 6:30 p.m. July 28 at the Lake County Public Library's Cedar Lake branch, 10010 W. 133rd Ave.

SWING SET STORIES | Crown Point

Crown Point Parks Department is inviting children ages 1 to 5 years and their mothers to attend a four-week Swing Set Storytime from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays at Collins Park, 95th and Merrillville Road. Snacks will be provided, but parents are asked to bring a drink for their child. Second session is July 29 through Aug. 19. Register by July 23. Fee is $20 for residents and $30 for nonresidents.

INDIAN CAMP | Lowell

The Potawatomi, a tribe of the Woodland Indians from Wisconsin, prospered and expanded into Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, and Indiana before being removed to Kansas and Oklahoma in the 1830s. Visitors can see how the Potawatomi lived, the wigwam home, clothing with decorations, wild and cultivated foods, at a Woodland Indiana Camp set up at Buckley Homestead County Park, 3606 Belshaw Road. Hear the stories, smell the cooking fire, and feel the bark of the willow saplings in the wigwam frame as reenactors live the lifestyle of those who lived here in 1750. The camp of the Callumic Band of Great Lakes Woodland Alliance is in the back 80 acres of the park, just southeast of the pioneer farm. Follow the pathway behind the cabin. Visit the site and talk with the reenactors during the weekends of July 26 & 27, Aug. 24, Sept. 6 & 7, Oct. 4 & 5 (Fall Festival) and Oct. 25 & 26.

NATURE PROGRAM | Crown Point

Crown Point Parks and Recreation Department offer a weekly class about nature for children 7 to 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. Mondays through Aug. 11 at Sauerman Woods Park, 1000 E. South St. The class combines learning about the environment with hands on crafts and may include nature walks, scavenger hunts and other activities. All supplies are included. Fees are $5 per class for residents and $10 for nonresidents. Register by Friday prior to each class.

ICE CREAM BENEFIT | Crown Point

Winfield/Jerry Ross PTO is sponsoring Cold Stone Creamery Nights on July 23 and Aug. 13. Winfield and Jerry Ross Elementary School families are invited to enjoy ice cream from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cold Stone Creamery, 11 W. 112th Ave., and have a portion of sales donated to the Winfield/Jerry Ross PTO. Coupons indicating PTO affiliation can be downloaded from the Winfield or Jerry Ross school web sites. All proceeds will be used to fun Family Fun events during the 2008-09 school year.

THEOLOGY ON TAP | Crown Point

St. Mary Catholic Church sponsors Theology on Tap from 7 to 8:30 p.m. July 23 and 30 at Marian Education Center, St. Anthony Medical Center, 1201 S. Main St. Weekly sessions offer speakers and a casual forum for young adults in their 20s and 30s to discuss faith topics relative to their lives.

COOKING CLASS | Crown Point

Crown Point Parks and Recreation Department offers Lil' Chefs, a cooking class for children 6 to 12, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays, July 31 to Aug. 28, at the Civic Center, 101 S. East St. Safety, table setting, etiquette and cooking fun are taught by Chef Billie Ross, with students learning to make a different item each week. All supplies are included. BUG OUT | Hammond

"UG! It's A Bug" is a Wild, Wild Woods program for ages 7-12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 23 at Gibson Woods Nature Preserve, 6201 Parrish Ave. Play mosquito tag, investigate dragonflies, and become bees, then we'll take a look at the lighter side of bugs like butterflies and discover that these crawly critters may not be bad after all. Fee is $5 and registration is required.

SCHOLARS SOUGHT | Indianapolis

The postmark deadline for the annual Lewis C. Bose Scholarship for Educational Leadership, sponsored by the law firm of Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, is July 25. This is the seventh year for the scholarship. The $2,000 Lewis C. Bose Scholarship for Educational Leadership will be awarded to an Indiana educator who has been accepted into and will attend an advanced degree program for education administration in 2008-09. The scholarship will be awarded based on the applicant's past academic and professional achievements, future goals, potential for leadership and financial need. Educators from all 92 counties in Indiana may apply.
