INDIANAPOLIS | Schererville Republican Dan Dumezich said Wednesday he has yet to decide whether to launch a 2010 challenge of U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind.

Dumezich, a tax attorney and former state legislator still active in GOP fundraising, began publicly weighing a Senate run in December. He said he will make a decision in the next few months.

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn this week told the National Journal that Bayh is not a priority target for 2010, meaning the group probably won't spent much in Indiana.

"I think, though, that if they see a quality candidate running against him, obviously things could change," Dumezich said.

Bayh, a member of the Senate Banking Committee, last month helped form a group of moderate Senate Democrats committed to seeking centrist positions on spending and other issues.

"I think it's very obvious that what (Bayh) is doing right now is affectation," Dumezich said. "I don't think it's truly him. I think he realizes he went way, way too far to the left and he's trying to bring his record back."
