A memorial to Lake County Sheriff's Deputy Gary Martin and Indiana State Police Lt. Gary Dudley in rural Vermillion County was vandalized this Labor Day weekend for a second time.
Two wooden crosses with the officers' names on them were broken, and profanity was spray-painted on what was left standing, according to Indiana State Police. A picture portraying Dudley and Martin together was covered with black spray paint, and flowers at the memorial were uprooted.
The two police officers were participating in the annual Concerns of Police Survivors bicycle ride Aug. 22, 2006, when a truck plowed into the ride.
The bicyclists were raising money for the families of fallen police officers.
The roadside memorial also was vandalized July 23.
Martin was 63 years old at the time of the accident. He was a retired Lake County police chief and an adjunct professor at Indiana University Northwest. He had a long career with the Gary Police Department.
Vermillion County Sheriff's Deputy C.B. McLaren discovered the damage at 7:30 a.m. Monday while on patrol. Senior Trooper Jeremy Lewis conducted an investigation at the scene.
State police said anyone with information about the crime can call the Terre Haute Indiana State Police Post at (812) 299-1151 or (812) 299-1152.
