Institution receiving 7,000 book for accreditation
VALPARAISO | A school in India will soon be the recipient of an entire library, thanks to the efforts of parishioners at Calvary Church in Valparaiso.
The non-denominational church partners with sister churches around the world to help with education and functional needs, said Pastor Lionel Young.
"Here in the West we have so much abundance. Our church has partnerships around the world, in India, Kenya and the Philippines. One of the greatest needs of these churches and schools is resources," said Young.
The Logos School of Theology in the state of Kerala, India, needed the resource of a library of 7,000 books in order to receive accreditation.
"Dr. Brent Whitefield, Valparaiso University professor of Asian studies and an elder at Calvary Church, really helped to get this library going," said Young, who then contacted an organization in Grand Rapids, Mich., called the Theological Book Network.
"They network with other libraries, like at the University of Chicago and Notre Dame, as well as publishers and presses around the world. They're a collection point for books here in the West," Young said.
He said the organization is providing 7,000 books for the school and the Calvary Church is paying for the $5,000 to ship the books, as well as the volunteers to meet the shipping requirements.
"Because of the recent terrorist bombings in Bangalore, India, the shipment is held up. We have to inventory every single book before it leaves the U.S. port. We're assembling the volunteers to itemize these 7,000 books in Grand Rapids, but we think it will be a fun project, and we're excited about it. My son is leading the effort," Young said.
He said the books are specifically selected by the organization for the school, with topics including Biblical languages, Greek, Hebrew, history, atlases and theological subjects.
"The books will help those who are ministers serving in these countries," Young said.
Once the books are itemized, it will take about 12 weeks to reach India.
