Homeschooling breakfast | Lansing
Homeschooling parents are invited to a special breakfast to find out what the library can offer them. It's at 8 a.m. July 30 at Lansing Public Library, 2750 Indiana Ave. Meet and network with other homeschool teachers from Lansing and the surrounding areas. Spaghetti dinner | Calumet City
Ehinger Brothers Veterans of Foreign Wars 8141 and Ladies Auxiliary will host a fifth Wednesday spaghetti dinner from 4:30 to 7 p.m. July 30 at the Post Clubrooms, 664 Hirsch St. Adults eat for $6, children for $2. A bake sale at the spaghetti dinner will provide funds for the cancer aid and research fund. Profits from the dinner are used for veterans.

Book sale | Calumet City
A used book sale will take place Aug. 2, 5, 7 and 9 at Calumet City Public Library, 660 Manistee Ave. There will be thousands of books for sale along with magazines, videos, cassette tapes and CDs. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 2; 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 5; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 7 (two-for-one day); and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 9 ($2 bag of books day.) Volunteers are needed to help sort books and work at the sale.

Benefit | Merrionette Park, Ill.
A benefit for Alexandra Holda will take place from 7 p.m. to midnight Aug. 1 at Bourbon Street, 3359 W. 115th St. The proceeds will help defray medical costs for the multiple heart surgeries the 14-year-old has undergone and still needs done. Tickets are $25, which includes open bar, buffet and music. There will be a bean bag tournament, raffles and a silent auction.

BACK TO SCHOOL | Munster
The Salvation Army holds its back to school program from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 9. The organization will help 300 children in kindergarten to sixth grade with school supplies and will provide a carnival with food for the children and their families. The following items are needed for the backpacks: No. 2 pencils, black and red pens, glue sticks, Elmer's glue, wide-ruled spiral notebooks, wide-ruled loose-leaf paper, folders with pockets, Fiskars scissors, colored pencils, highlighters, assignment notebooks, pencil boxes and plastic zipper pencil pouches. Cash donations will be accepted, as well as beverages and food for the carnival.

VISIT SCHOOLHOUSE | Hammond
The Little Red Schoolhouse will have an open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 3 in Hessville Park, 173rd Street and Kennedy Avenue. Buy a hot dog, chips and a drink for $1. Spend the day or a couple of hours. Activities include a clown with balloons, children's games and face painting all day. Membership opportunities will be available. Schoolhouse tours will be provided, and photos can be taken with the covered wagon for a small fee.

ICE CENTER | Dyer
Midwest Training and Ice Center will conduct a free month of tots class Tuesdays in August during open skate. The free class is open to preschoolers 3 to 5 years old and is an introduction to the world of ice skating. Children learn the basic skills of skating while developing balance and coordination with an emphasis on group participation and fun. Advance registration is required.
