Sheriff's Department now seeking applicants
VALPARAISO | The Porter County Sheriff's Department will make applications for the position of patrol officer available from Monday to Nov. 21.
The applications, which will be available at the Sheriff's Department Records Division during business hours or online at portercountysheriff.com, will be due by 4 p.m. Dec. 12.
Active police officers with at least three years experience are eligible for first class patrolman's pay, which is $44,911. The starting pay for a probationary officer is $33,257.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens at least 21 years old, and must reside in Porter County within six months. They must have a high school diploma or equivalent, must have a valid driver's license, must have normal hearing and correctable vision to 20/40. They must pass written and physical testing, a background investigation, an oral interview, a polygraph or voice stress examination, a drug screen, a medical exam and a psychological examination.
Cops say drunken man elected to drive home
VALPARAISO | Valparaiso police responded to the Porter County Voter Registration Office at 5 p.m. Thursday after someone reported an intoxicated man had just left.
Police spoke to a man standing near the building, which is located at 155 Indiana Ave., and he told officers he drove to the building and was planning to drive home. Police said the man -- David Zubik, 53, of 940 N. County Road 200 East, Chesterton -- was intoxicated, so they arrested him on a public intoxication charge.

Theft. North County Road 250 West resident Leah Lincoln reported a $150 compact disc player, $60 worth of compact discs and $15 worth of other items stolen from her car.

Theft. South 9th Street resident Paul Murray reported someone caused $800 damage to his truck while siphoning $15 worth of gas.

Theft. Hunter Drive resident Ryan Booth reported a $100 radar detector and $105 worth of other items stolen from his car.
Theft. Elk Lane resident Paula Tillman reported two GPS units worth $900 total and sunglasses worth $260 stolen from her car.
Theft. Elk Lane resident Scott Magee reported a $200 satellite radio stolen from his car.
Theft. Elk Lane resident Corbitt Lewis reported a $150 radar detector stolen from his van.

Theft. Comcast, 2225 Locust St., reported five catalytic converters stolen off three vans. The loss is $1,500.

Vandalism. Coolman Communities, of Valparaiso, reported $280 damage to a home on Summerfield in Union Township. The home serves as a business and display home for the subdivision.

Arrests. Police responded to a suspicious activity complaint at 8:36 p.m. at Brigata and Regalo drives. Police ended up arresting four juveniles on drug charges after determining they came to the area to smoke marijuana.
