Victim's grandmother unhappy with sentence
VALPARAISO | A Portage Township man, who was convicted of child molesting in 1990, was sentenced Monday to 25 years behind bars after admitting to molesting another child.
Steven Gilbert Mayes, 41, struck a deal with prosecutors that called for him to receive 20 years for Class A felony child molesting and five additional years for being a habitual sex offender.
Mayes pleaded guilty in the second offense to molesting an 8-year-old girl.
Police said the girl was molested in June 2007 while she and other neighborhood children were playing hide and seek with Mayes. She told police she was hiding in Mayes' van when he found her, sat her on a seat and molested her.
Police said the girl complained of discomfort and was diagnosed with an infection after the incident. The molestation came to light when the girl said she didn't want to walk past Mayes' home in the Meadowview Mobile Home Park because "he did something very bad to me."
The victim's grandmother told the court Monday she felt Mayes was getting off easy, while her granddaughter was scarred for life.
"I just don't feel justice has been served in this case," she said.
Mayes reportedly told police he was molested while growing up in foster care.
