EAST CHICAGO | Gunshots to the chest killed an 18-year-old East Chicago man Saturday night on Indianapolis Boulevard.
Marcus Ponce was pronounced dead at 8:45 p.m. in the emergency room at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, according to a spokesman for the Lake County coroner's office. Ponce was shot in the 5000 block of Indianapolis Boulevard, the spokesman said.
East Chicago police could not be reached for comment Sunday night. City spokesman Damian Rico offered almost no information, but he said investigators are following leads. Rico could not say if police had arrested anyone Sunday night.
The coroner's office reported Ponce, of the 4000 block of Pulaski Street, was shot at an address for a social clubhouse on Indianapolis Boulevard near Kosciuszko Park. Men at that clubhouse Sunday night said Ponce was shot outside and no one at the clubhouse Saturday night knew about the crime before police questioned patrons.
Rico asked anyone with information to call the Police Department's anonymous tip line at (219) 391-8500.
