CROWN POINT | Lake Criminal Court Judge Diane Boswell sentenced a Gary man to 40 years in prison Friday for a fatal shooting that remains a mystery to the victim's family.

Christopher Castillo, 29, pleaded guilty last month to voluntary manslaughter.

Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter said Brian Spears, 22, of Gary, had stopped at the Super Duper Gas and Food Mart in the 5300 block of 15th Avenue in Gary on March 12, 2002, and was pumping gas into his vehicle when Castillo approached and fired a shot at Spears, fled in a car, returned and fatally shot Spears several more times.

Diane Poulton, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor, said the victim's family wanted to know a motive for the killing. She said her office offered Castillo a more lenient plea if he would explain his actions, but Castillo refused to answer any questions about why he did it, she said. -- BY BILL DOLAN, THE TIMES
