A Calumet City man was killed at a Chicago Heights steel plant Monday morning when equipment he was using malfunctioned and crushed him.

Heladio Ramirez, 32, of the 500 block of Ingraham Avenue, was pronounced dead at 10:17 a.m. at St. James Hospital and Health Centers in Chicago Heights, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Chicago Heights police confirmed Wednesday morning that Ramirez was killed when a heavy piece of equipment failed and fell on him at Highway Steel, 211 E. Main St. in Chicago Heights.

An autopsy to determine the exact cause of death is scheduled to take place Wednesday, the medical examiner's spokesman said.
