Town groups planning Veterans Day activities

Highland has a week of events planned to celebrate Veterans Day.

The events are spearheaded by Doug Handles ll, exalted ruler of Highland Elks Lodge No. 981, in cooperation with the town's Special Events Committee, Daughters of the American Revolution, Highland American Legion Post 180 and Highland VFW Post 1109.

For starters, children from local schools will compose essays this week on what Veterans Day mean to them.

On Friday, the Elks Lodge, 3120 45th St., will host the Gold Star Veterans Memorial Display from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. The event will be free and feature a variety of veterans groups, including Pearl Harbor survivors at 5:30 p.m., the Korean War Veterans Association at 6, the Vietnam Veterans Association at 6:30, the Women's Veterans Association at 7 and the American Legion's district director at 7:30.

On Saturday, the Daughters of the American Revolution will offer at veterans' ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Highway of Flags Veterans Memorial at Ridge Road and Indianapolis Boulevard.

The Elks Lodge will offer an all-you-can-eat spaghetti fundraiser from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the lodge. Cost is $7 for adults, $4 for children ages 5 to 12 and free for kids younger than 5.

Finally, the Highland Special Events Advisory Committee will sponsor a display of military equipment in Main Square Park from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. There will be no cost to attend. American Legion Post 180 will dispose of used flags in a ceremony at 2 p.m. at the park.

WHITING

Historic preservation organization to meet

The Whiting Historic Preservation Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the conference room at City Hall, 1443 119th St.
