MEET LHS NIGHT | Lowell

Parents are invited to Meet LHS Night at 7 p.m. Aug. 20 at Lowell High School, 2051 E. Commercial Ave. Class schedules will be available at 6:45 p.m. in the North Lobby. Following opening remarks in the auditorium, parents will spend seven minutes in each of their child's classes with the teachers. Refreshments will be available in the cafeteria, where administrators and guidance staff will greet parents.

COOKING CLASS | Crown Point

Crown Point Parks and Recreation Department offers Lil' Chefs, a five-week cooking class for children, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 4 to Oct. 2, at the Civic Center, 101 S. East St. Chef Billie Ross teaches safety, table setting, etiquette and cooking fun, with students learning to make a different item from around the world each week. All supplies are included. Fee is $45 for residents and $60 for nonresidents. Register by Aug. 29.

INTERNET SAFETY | DeMotte

Parents and children alike are invited to attend "Internet Safety for Parents and Kids," a program at 6 p.m. Aug. 28 at the DeMotte Library, 901 Birch St. SW. Presented by Det. Rick Johnson of the DeMotte Police Department, the program will address Internet safety issues regarding popular Websites such as MySpace and Facebook. Register online, by phone or in person.

CONTINUING ED AWARDS | Hobart

Hobart Epsilon Zeta chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa, Inc. is accepting applications for two Continuing Education scholarships. The $1500 scholarships will be awarded at the chapter's Annual Style Show on Nov. 9. To qualify, applicants must have a high school diploma and be returning to further their education after at least a five-year absence from school. Applicants should be well-rounded individuals active in their communities. All applications must be postmarked by Sept. 30.

GOLF OUTING | Hobart

The second St. Bridget Catholic School golf outing will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start

BACK TO SCHOOL | Hobart

A Back to School Blow-Out will be held through the LOVE HOBART campaign from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 23 at Hobart Assembly of God, 7545 E. Eagle Ridge Road. INDIAN CAMP | Lowell

Visitors can see how the Potawatomi tribe lived, the wigwam home, clothing with decorations, wild and cultivated foods, at a Woodland Indiana Camp set up at Buckley Homestead County Park, 3606 Belshaw Road. Hear the stories, smell the cooking fire, and feel the bark of the willow saplings in the wigwam frame as reenactors live the lifestyle of those who lived here in 1750. The camp of the Callumic Band of Great Lakes Woodland Alliance is in the back 80 acres of the park, just southeast of the pioneer farm. Follow the pathway behind the cabin. Talk with the reenactors during the Aug. 24, Sept. 6 & 7, Oct. 4 & 5 (Fall Festival) and Oct. 25 & 26.

PRESCHOOL PROGRAM | Hobart

Hobart Family YMCA is accepting registration for its fall 2008-09 Developmental Preschool program at the YMCA, 601 West 40th Place. A $50 nonrefundable registration fee along with birth certificate and immunization records are requested at registration. A new 3- and 4-year-old class has been added and sessions begin Sept. 3. The program includes many components in the child's learning experiences that stimulate a young mind and influences a lifetime of learning ability. Children learn through a variety of fun academics, social and developmental activities such as learning centers, music, arts and crafts, computers, Pre-Fit, a creative movement program, character development, swim-time, gym time, field trips and parties.

INTRO TO ALZHEIMER'S | Merrillville

Join a free informational and interactive session from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 29 at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. U.S. 30, that will focus on understanding the disease process of progressive dementias such as Alzheimer's disease. This monthly presentation should be attended prior to taking the advanced dementia class. A free monthly informational and interactive session will focus on advanced topics with regard to caring for individuals with progressive dementia from noon to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 29 at the library. Topics will include such things as handling behavior/communication changes, assisting with activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, etc.), planning of activities, and addressing difficult transitions (i.e., loss of driving privileges). Co-sponsored with Alzheimer's Services of Northern Indiana, registration will be taken for both classes at the toll-free number.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM | Crown Point

Jessica Hendricks, of Crown Point, has been awarded a Faculty Scholarship from Bethel College for the fall. The award ranges from $2,500 to $3,500 and is renewable. Hendricks, who was home schooled, plans to study elementary education.

CHILD-CARE MINISTRY | Hobart

Caring Heart, Open Arms Child-care and Development Ministry is accepting full- and half-day kindergarten with before and after school care enrollment at South Lake Worship Center, 3440 W 61st Ave. Children must be 5 by Aug. 1 and a birth certificate, current immunization record and physical exam are required. The facility is open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Transportation is provided by public school buses to and from George Earle Elementary School in Hobart and John Wood Elementary School in Merrillville.

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS | Lake County

The Legacy Foundation Inc., serving as the administrator of the Cenifax Scholarship, announces the 2008 recipients: Kimberly Perz (Crown Point) Andrean High School, attending Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology; and Holly Huseman (Cedar Lake) Lowell High School, attending Purdue University. Husman is the daughter of Betty (Lake County Soil & Water Conservation Office) and Dale Huseman; Perz is the daughter of AliceAnn Kuzemka (Lake County Circuit Court Division) and Jeffrey Perz. The scholarship was established in 2005 by Cenifax Management Services Inc. Eight high school seniors have received the $2,500 award. Eligible students must be graduating high school seniors whose parent or grandparent is a current employee of Lake County Government at the Government Center in Crown Point or related sites.

IMPACT GRANTS | Jasper, Newton counties

Jasper Foundation and Newton County Community Foundation has announced that the boards of both foundations recently voted to set aside approximately half of this year's unrestricted grant funds to award Community Impact Grants that have a significant impact on the community in one of the areas of the foundation's mission. These grants will be directed by both boards to address a particular theme or topic. This year the Jasper Foundation would like to see these larger grants help in the area of Social Concerns, specifically in the area of helping underserved groups such as at-risk children or the elderly. The Newton County Community Foundation has selected the area of Historic Preservation as its major focus. To be considered, applications from area nonprofits will need to have a significant and long-term impact for their programs. The deadline for all applications is Oct. 1.

RIVER FESTIVAL | Kouts

Kankakee Valley Historical Society will host the inaugural Aukiki River Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 23 at 1099 Baums Bridge Road. Take an experiential voyage through time - 1700s-1920s - with vintage base ball, authentic Appalachian music, French Voyageur, Native American and Fur Trader encampments, and more. Food concessions will be available. The historic Collier Lodge and the Kankakee River set the backdrop for a day of fun for the entire family. The Annual Kouts Pork Fest is only five minutes away.
