Police find painkillers on Wheeler student

UNION TOWNSHIP | A 16-year-old boy who attends Wheeler High School was arrested on a possession of a controlled substance charge after police said he was caught with 43 pills that were determined to be the generic version of the painkiller Darvocet.

Police said an odor of marijuana was detected on the student Monday morning, so he was told to empty his pockets. Police said a bag of pills was found in his pants, but he denied ownership of them. He was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center.

Cops: Boy hit girl who wouldn't get his lunch

VALPARAISO | A 14-year-old boy who attends Valparaiso High School was arrested on theft and battery charges Monday at the school.

The boy is accused of battering a 14-year-old girl because she wouldn't get his lunch for him. Police said the boy didn't want to get his own lunch because he got caught using someone else's identification in the lunch line. The boy is accused of slamming the girl against a vending machine several times and taking a cellular phone from her purse.

The boy was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center.

Cops expect standoff, find suspect in bathtub

CHESTERTON | Chesterton police called Emergency Response Team members to 1130 Gladys Lane on Monday night after a resident of the home was accused of battering his mother and brother, then refusing to come out.

The officers entered the home and found the suspect, Michael Homner, 22, taking a bath. He was arrested without incident on battery charges.

Homner said he ingested marijuana and LSD that evening and took 30 vitamin pills to enhance the acid trip. Police said he didn't remember the events of the evening and appeared surprised when told he caused his mother to bleed.

Portage Junior Miss reports missing cash

PORTAGE | An official with Portage Junior Miss softball league called Portage police Monday to report that about $1,500 is missing from the organization.

Police said the shortfall was discovered after a fundraising campaign. The case is under investigation.

Police say metal thief caught at ArcelorMittal

BURNS HARBOR | Burns Harbor police responded to ArcelorMittal at 4:30 a.m. Monday after steel mill officials reported catching a man who stole nickel metal.

Police arrived and arrested Mark Selby, 34, of Portage, on charges of theft, criminal trespass, resisting, public intoxication, false informing and auto theft. Police said another suspect got away after a vehicle pursuit and foot pursuit that ended in Gary.

Police said Selby had earlier been warned to stay away from the mill because his contractor's pass was revoked on suspicion of metal stealing. On Monday, he and another man were seen taking metal, police said.

Man flees from cops, gets jolted with Taser

VALPARAISO | Valparaiso police stopped a motorist at 3:39 a.m. Tuesday at the Speedway station at Ind. 2 and U.S. 30 after a license plate check showed he had a suspended license.

Police said the driver, Stephen E. Miller, 22, of DeMotte, fled on foot, but fell to the ground after being shocked by a police officer's Taser.

Miller was found to posses Xanax pills and marijuana, police said. He was arrested on charges of driving while suspended, resisting, possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.

Theft. Corey Lane resident William Sederberg told police a neighbor stole Snoopy and ghost blow-up decorations from his yard. Police said the neighbor admitted taking them because she grew tired of looking at them. Police said she returned them and gave her neighbor $20 to cover damages to one.

MONDAY

Vandalism. Yesterday's Treasures, 700 Broadway, reported spray-painted graffiti caused $50 damage.

Vandalism. The town of Chesterton reported a stop sign at 13th Street and Morgan Avenue was spray-painted, causing $75 damage. In addition, graffiti was spray-painted at Dogwood Park, causing $300 damage.
