SOUTH HAVEN | A South Haven man was arrested on multiple charges after he was accused of getting drunk and causing a disturbance in Paul Saylor Elementary School in South Haven, then spitting blood and issuing threats to responding police officers and medics.
The man, John Herron, 20, of 785 Juniper Road, was arrested on charges of battery by bodily waste, intimidation, disorderly conduct, underage drinking and resisting.
Porter County police said they were called to the school at 331 Midway Drive, at 3:55 p.m. Thursday. A woman who was managing a food purchasing program in the school's cafeteria told police she saw Herron stagger into the cafeteria, then curse and be loud.
The woman told police she could tell Herron was intoxicated, so she asked him to leave, but he became aggressive and threatened to hurt her. Herron then left the school with two friends he was with.
Police said they found Herron and the others at nearby Eagle Creek Road and LaHonda Drive. At that location, a man told police Herron knocked over some landscaping.
Police said Herron was intoxicated and was bleeding from fresh wrist wounds. They said he threatened police, cursed at police officers and medics and resisted arrest. Police said they took Herron to Porter Portage Hospital Campus for medical clearance, but they said he called the doctor and staff derogatory names and threatened to harm them.
Police said while they were trying to restrain Herron, he intentionally spit blood on a South Haven firefighter. Herron was then taken to Porter County Jail. He faces more than five years behind bars if convicted of the charges against him.
