VALPARAISO | Replacing the high school athletic track is among Valparaiso Community Schools construction projects on tap for the summer of 2009.
The estimated $550,000 project and others, totaling more than $1.4 million, are laid out in the district's 2009 capital projects fund budget that the School Board approved last week.
Other projects include:
- Replacement of roof sections and replacement or refurbishment of auditorium seats at Valparaiso High School for $600,000.
- Roof work at Memorial Elementary School for $214,000.
- Roof work at Cooks Corners Elementary School for $167,000.
- Roof work at Parkview Elementary School for $66,000.
Bids on the work will go out this fall but will rely on state approval of the budget, district finance officer David White said. That is a concern because the district's 2008 budget still has not been certified, and many elements of the 2009 budget are working guesses, White said.
The district could curtail some of the projects if the state cuts its funding, he said. It also could eliminate the high school auditorium work if the recent proposal to revamp city schools moves forward, White said. The proposal includes renovating the auditorium and replacing the high school pool, White said.
The total $10 million capital projects fund also pays for purchase and maintenance of equipment, insurance, technology, rentals of grounds and buildings, and other services.
