AWARD WINNERS | Hammond
Purdue University Calumet's Office of Student Activities recently announced Student Organization Award Winners for the 2007-08 academic year. Students honored and their awards were: Isabel Rodriguez, of East Chicago, editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper, The Chronicle - Activities, Community Service and Excellence Award; and Otis Brewer III, of Highland, president of the Society for Human Resource Management student chapter - UPS Outstanding Student Award. Honored student organizations and the related awards were: Los Latinos - Purdue Alumni Association Calumet Most Active Organization Established Five Years or More; Finance and Accounting Club - Purdue Alumni Association Calumet Most Active Organization Established Five Years or Less; Society for Human Resource Management - Purdue Alumni Association Calumet Excellence in Service Award. Also recognized as student organization faculty/staff Advisors of the Year were Juan Casas of Los Latinos and Edward Furticella of the Finance and
Accounting Club. Additionally, the following students received "Above and Beyond" Awards: Kenneth Hartman, of Crown Point, Society for Human Resource Management; Priscilla Malinich, of Dyer, Finance and Accounting Club; Adriane Berry, of Gary, Society for Human Resource Management; Cynthia Irions, of Gary, Indiana Student Education Association; Zhong Tao Li and QiDong Shi ,of Hammond, the Chinese Student Association; and Amanda Winland, of Valparaiso, the Indiana Student Education Association.
TRAIN AS A DOULA | Crown Point
A doula training class will be held Oct. 2 to 4 at St. Anthony Medical Center, 1201 S. Main St. A 12-hour childbirth class and readings must be completed prior to the workshop. Doulas are trained in the ancient art of childbirth support.

BOOKreMARKS | Lake County
The featured book for July for readers participating in the online book discussion hosted by the Lake County Public Library is "Rules of the Road" by Joan Bauer, a popular young adult author. It is the story of 16-year-old Jenna, who learns much more than the rules of the road as she drives her crusty, elderly employer from Chicago to Dallas. QUILTING BEE | Hobart
A quilting bee will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. July 27 at Deep River County Park in Wood's Historic Grist Mill, 9410 Old Lincoln Hwy. Stop in on the fourth Sunday of each month to visit with the Deep River Quilters as they work on the current quilt. Quilt-making at Deep River County Park, from blocks donated, assembled, and quilted by volunteers is an on-going activity. Watch as volunteers or sit with them and put in your own stitches. Quilts made since 1979 are on exhibit. Deadline to submit a block(s) is July 27.

EDUCATION FAIR | Gary
Indiana Wesleyan University and the Gary Public Library have paired up to offer an education fair from 3 to 6:30 p.m. July 29 at the library, 220 W. Fifth Ave. The event is open to adult learners and high school students. Representatives from universities and colleges include Indiana Wesleyan, Calumet College, Devry, Indiana University Northwest, College of court Reporting, Indiana Tech, Ivy Tech, Purdue University Calumet and the University of Phoenix.

SPINAL CORD FILMS | Portage
The Northwest Indiana Spinal Cord Injury Group is sponsoring a film series on life in a wheelchair. All films will begin at 2 p.m. at the Portage 16/IMAX, 6550 U.S. Viewings are free, but donations will be accepted. The screenings include "Christopher Reeve: Hope in Motion," shown today. The film focuses on Reeve's recovery of movement and his fight to fully regain his mobility. It follows Reeve over many months of treatment and public campaigning for funds for stem cell research. The film was completed shortly before his death. On Aug. 3, the film will be "Mapping Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita." When neurologist Dr. Jack Kessler's daughter injured her spine in a skiing accident, he turned his energies toward finding a method to repair damaged spinal cords. The Aug. 17 film is "Murderball." It chronicles the journey of the United States Para Olympic Quad Rugby Team from 2002 to 2004, with a championship game.

STUDENT ORIENTATION | Gary
Incoming freshman or returning nontraditional students at Indiana University Northwest may attend a summer orientation session beginning at 12:30 p.m. July 30, in the Savannah Center on campus, 3400 Broadway. Students can register for classes, receive academic advice, acquire information about student services and campus groups and network with fellow students. There also will be several formal presentations. A second orientation session is scheduled for Aug. 14.

Join Ivy Tech Community College-Northwest at the East Chicago, Gary, Michigan City and Valparaiso campuses for their summer open houses from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. July 31.
