College to use grant money for buying tools
South Suburban College plans to use money received from a federal grant to purchase new tools and equipment for its vocational programs that teach construction techniques.
The community college received $15,000 as a grant through the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education program, which provides money to be distributed by state entities to high school districts and community colleges for special projects.
College officials will use the money to improve their masonry lab, purchase a cement mixer, a compression tester and brick saw, along with other purchases of assorted hand tools.
The grant was applied for last year, and money was received last month.
Officials have placed the orders for the new tools and equipment, and hope to have received all of the new items in time for the beginning of the new semester in January.
