MERRILLVILLE

Tools reported stolen from construction trailer

Police said tools, valued at about $600, were stolen from a construction trailer after 7 p.m. Tuesday and before 7 a.m. Wednesday in the 8200 block of Wright Street.

Police said the tools included five screw guns and two tape measures.

Police have no suspects in the case.

HOBART

Phone line cut during an attempted burglary

An employee at Sherry's Catering, 8190 E. 37th Ave., on Thursday morning reported an attempted burglary.

The employee told police a door handle was loose and someone had cut the phone line.

Nothing was reported missing, police said.

Principal named to state board for a 3-year term

Merrillville Superintendent Tony Lux announced that Mary Hoffman, the principal at Wood Elementary School, has been named to a three-year term on the board of directors for the Indiana Association of School Principals. Lux made the announcement Tuesday at the Merrillville School Board meeting.

School Board increases the price of milk carton

The Crown Point School Board voted in June to increase the price of a carton of milk this fall. Milk prices will go from 35 cents to 40 cents. School districts across Northwest Indiana are experiencing higher food costs from suppliers and, in some cases, passing that on to consumers.

Donations from picnic to benefit cancer group

Crown Point will host a citywide picnic from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Lake County Fairgrounds.

The event will include hamburgers, hot dogs and a hog roast. Children can jump around in a bouncy castle with a 15-foot slide.

There is no cost to attend, but donations will be accepted. All proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
