Cops say 4-year-old apparently smeared paint on his mom, himself, all over apartment
VALPARAISO | Valparaiso police arrested a man and woman and turned their 4-year-old boy over to Child Protective Services after finding the child apparently had run amok while his parents were passed out drunk.
Police said Michael and Elizabeth Wages, both 44 and of 205 E. Institute, were arrested Monday night on public intoxication charges. Michael Wages also is accused of possessing the painkiller Xanax without proof of a prescription.
Police said they responded to a report of a disturbance at the Wages' apartment at 6:37 p.m., but they said they were just singing. Police left the apartment after telling them to remain inside because they had been drinking.
Police received a report two hours later that a man was passed out in a vehicle there. They found Michael Wages and arrested him on charges of public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance.
When police went to talk to Elizabeth Wages, they found white paint all over her and her son, on the cabinets, floor, television, stove and just about everything in the living room.
Police think the boy painted the apartment and his mother while she was unconscious.
Police said the boy appeared underweight for his age. The 4-year-old was wearing diapers, which were soiled, and the boy handed an officer an empty, dirty juice cup, indicating he was thirsty. He also picked up an aerosol can of Pledge furniture cleaner and sprayed an officer with it.
In addition, a window screen had been cut and the boy could have fallen from the second story, police said.
The boy was taken by Child Protective Services.
Elizabeth Wages, who police say had an IV in her arm after leaving the hospital earlier in day against medical advice, left the apartment and was arrested on a public intoxication charge. Police said she'd been at the hospital seeking painkillers, but was denied.
