CENTER TOWNSHIP | An Illinois man apparently drown Sunday afternoon while swimming at Lake 'O The Woods Nudist Colony, 1353 Sager Road in the Valparaiso area.
James Spurgeon, 48, of Lisle, Ill., was pronounced dead at 3:45 p.m. Sunday.
Spurgeon was swimming out to a raft on Sagers Lake when he began struggling, then went under the water, Indiana Conservation Officer Gene Davis said.
Davis said Spurgeon failed to resurface, so another guest, Illinois resident Ronald Stolverg, jumped into the water and began searching. Stolverg, who was wearing swimming goggles, located Spurgeon about 75 feet from shore in about 10 feet of water.
Davis estimates Spurgeon was under for about 10 minutes.
Valparaiso firefighters helped bring Spurgeon to shore. CPR was performed, but Spurgeon was pronounced dead at Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus.
Davis, whose agency investigates all drownings except those in swimming pools and bathtubs, said all indications are that the death is an accidental drowning.
The Porter County coroner's office said an autopsy and toxicology testing are being done to determine if a medical problem, drugs or alcohol contributed to the death. If the death is ruled a drowning, it would be the second of the year in Porter County -- the other being the July 13 death on Lake Michigan of DaVante Jackson, of Chicago Heights.
