WII BOWLING | Crown Point

Crown Point Parks and Recreation Department hosts its first Wii Bowling Tournament for all ages at 1 p.m. July 27 at the Civic Center, 101 S. East St. Entry fee is $5 for residents and $10 for nonresidents, due July 21.

VOLLEYBASH ON SAND | Crown Point

A double-elimination, 4-on-4 Coed Sand Volleyball Tourney will be held Aug. 2 at the Southlake YMCA, 1450 S. Court St. Games start at 8 a.m.; rain out date is Aug. 3. Teams of four must have at least two women on the roster. Fee is $80 per team. Register through July 30.

PRESSURE SCREENING | Lake Station

DIABETES PROGRAM | Merrillville

Visiting Nurse Association of Porter County will present "Warning Signs and Prevention of Diabetes" as part of its Senior Moments lecture series in July at locations in Lake and Porter County. The program will be offered at 10:30 a.m. July 23 at Merrillville Senior Center at Merrillville High School, 276 E. 68th Place. This informative program will discuss the warning signs and how to prevent diabetes. Participants will receive a free gift and a healthy snack.

DEMENTIA SESSION | Merrillville

Towne Centre Retirement Community will host a free Dementia Seminar and Luncheon on from noon to 1:30 p.m. July 28 at 7250 Arthur Blvd. The guest speaker will be Darren Leavitt, who holds a master's degree in organizational leadership and is certified in both crisis intervention and as a court mediator in Illinois. He will discuss how dementia is a disease that goes beyond the lives of those suffering from it. Reservations are required.

GET IN SHAPE | Crown Point

Crown Point Parks Department and Pilates Center of NWI offer a six-week Pilates class for adults from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Aug. 5 to Sept. 9, at the Civic Center, 101 S. East St. Class will focus on strengthening muscles, increasing flexibility and improving posture. A more intense "Bump" Pilates class, which incorporates the use of an exercise ball and handweights, will also be offered from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, Aug. 14 to Sept. 18. Cost is $42 per for residents and $55 for nonresidents for each series, with a $7 discount for both classes Bring a traditional yoga mat and/or bath towel. Registration required. Registration deadline is Aug. 1 for Pilates and Aug. 5 for bump Pilates.

BLOOD DRIVE | Lowell

Blood donors are needed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Lowell Public Library, 1505 E. Commercial Ave., to give the American Red Cross a "Gift of Life." This event is cosponsored by the Lowell Public Library and the GFWC Lowell Woman's Club. Call for an appointment, or walk-ins are always welcome. Donors must be healthy, at least 17 and weigh at least 110 pounds, and can donate blood every 56 days.

SPINAL CORD FILMS | Portage

The Northwest Indiana Spinal Cord Injury Group is sponsoring a film series on life in a wheelchair. All films will begin at 2 p.m. at the Portage 16/IMAX, 6550 U.S. Viewings are free, but donations will be accepted. The screenings include "Christopher Reeve: Hope in Motion," shown today. The film focuses on Reeve's recovery of movement and his fight to fully regain his mobility. It follows Reeve over many months of treatment and public campaigning for funds for stem cell research. The film was completed shortly before his death. On Aug. 3, the film will be "Mapping Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita." When neurologist Dr. Jack Kessler's daughter injured her spine in a skiing accident, he turned his energies toward finding a method to repair damaged spinal cords. The Aug. 17 film is "Murderball." It chronicles the journey of the United States Para Olympic Quad Rugby Team from 2002 to 2004, with a championship game.

BREAST-FEEDING CLASS | Crown Point

A breast-feeding class for women and their support people is 7 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Aug. 5, Oct. 7 and Dec. 9, or Wednesdays, Aug. 6, Oct. 8 or Dec. 10, at St. Anthony Medical Center, 1201 S. Main St. Topics include the role of the partner, how to feed your baby when you are away and suggestions for returning to work. Class meets the final evening of each Preparing for Childbirth series. MEMORY WALK | Merrillville

The Alzheimer's Association's annual Memory Walk will take place Sept. 20 at Hidden Lake Park, 6355 Broadway. Enjoy music by Nashville singer/songwriter Jason Sanders; a Moon Walk, face painting, and balloons for children, along with hot dogs and beverages. Memory Walk is a noncompetitive fundraising and awareness walk designed to support the mission of the Alzheimer's Association. Each year, participants sign up as teams or individuals, and collect pledges from their friends, family, coworkers, and others to raise as many dollars as possible. Start a team, join one, or make a donation.

SCHOLARS SOUGHT | Indianapolis

The postmark deadline for the annual Lewis C. Bose Scholarship for Educational Leadership, sponsored by the law firm of Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, is July 25. This is the seventh year for the scholarship. The $2,000 Lewis C. Bose Scholarship for Educational Leadership will be awarded to an Indiana educator who has been accepted into and will attend an advanced degree program for education administration in 2008-09. The scholarship will be awarded based on the applicant's past academic and professional achievements, future goals, potential for leadership and financial need. Educators from all 92 counties in Indiana may apply.
