Cal City police recover 3 of 6 cars stolen in one week, boost patrols

CALUMET CITY | Six cars were stolen in Calumet City over the course of a week, police said.

The city is adding patrols and manpower on the streets, Calumet City Police Chief Edward Gilmore said. Occasionally, one or two people turn bold and steal cars in a certain area until they are caught, he said.

"Sooner or later, if they keep working in Calumet City, we'll (get) them in Calumet City," he said.

Police had not recovered the following stolen vehicles as of Thursday, Assistant Police Chief Tony Augun said.

- A 1986 Chevrolet Caprice stolen between 10:30 p.m. Aug. 21 and 7 a.m. Aug. 22 from the first block of Sycamore Court. The car is tan on top and white on bottom.

- A 1995 Ford Ranger stolen sometime between 7 a.m. Aug. 20 and 7 a.m. Aug. 21 from the 500 block of Harrison Avenue.

- A gold 1988 Chevrolet Caprice taken between midnight and 6:45 a.m. Aug. 18 from the 400 block of Gordon Avenue. The car has dents all over it, the trunk lock was punched out prior to the theft and the left headlight is out, the police report shows. The car also has a Chinese symbol and rainbow on the trunk, according to records.

Three stolen vehicles already have been recovered, including a car stolen between 12:10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday from a parking lot in the 1400 block of State Street and a car stolen between 5:30 and 10:30 a.m. Saturday from a parking lot in the first block of 158th, Augun said.

A 1992 Pontiac Bonneville was stolen between 2 p.m. Aug. 21 and 5:25 a.m. Aug. 22 from the 1500 block of Memorial Drive but was recovered Friday after the car's owner spotted it in the 500 block of Bensley Avenue, police records state.

A stereo and drill set were stolen from the car, a rear passenger window was broken and its steering column had been peeled, police records state.
