Settlers Day | South Holland
Step back in time and experience what life was like for the pioneers and other early Americans at Sand Ridge Nature Center's 36th annual Settlers Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 23 at 15891 Paxton Ave. The Cook County Forest Preserve's Sand Ridge Nature Center will be transformed into a setting depicting pioneer life in America during the early 1800s. This special event is free; but donations of money or nonperishable foods to benefit the Greater Chicago Food Depository will be accepted at the nature center building.

Concert | Chicago
The St. Xavier University Symphonic Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at the Rehearsal Performance Space in the Warde Academic Center at SXU's Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St. The ensemble will perform Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 in F major (Op. 68), Verdi's Overture to La Forza del Destino, Grainger's Mock Morris, and Sullivan's Overture to the HMS Pinafore.General admission is $6 and $5 for seniors and visiting students.

Theater production | Chicago
St. Florian School presents a professional theater production Nov. 22 in St. Florian's Gymnasium, at 131st and Houston avenues in Chicago's Hegewisch neighborhood. From the makers of Late Nite Catechism, Sisters Christmas Catechism "The Mystery of the Magi's Gold" will be performed. Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Cost is $30 adults and $20 for children ages 10 to 13. Ticket sales will benefit St. Florian School's new Art & Music Program provided by the Beverly Arts Center's Community Outreach Program.

Spaghetti Fest | East Chicago
American Legion Auxiliary Allied Unit 369 will have its annual Spaghetti Fest from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 21 at the post, 1401 W. Chicago Ave. It's $6 per person. A silent auction and bake sale will also take place. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Chicago Public Library's Hegewisch branch will host a program titled Science Chicago at 10 a.m. Dec. 2 at the library, 3048 E. 130th St. Children can attend this fast-paced, funny and engaging science demonstration program. Kids will learn about science fair projects and the scientific method. They will learn more about conservation and incorporating being green into doing science fair projects. Grandparents can bring their grandchildren for an evening of Gingerbread Fun from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 5 at Lan-Oak Park District. Registration deadline is Nov. 28 and the fee is $25 for residents, $30 nonresidents. It's for ages 10 and younger.

Combat Classic | Hammond
Mayor Thomas M. McDermott Jr., Hammond Parks & Recreation, and Corral's Martial Arts will host the return of Corral's Combat Classic Nov. 22 at the Hammond Civic Center, 5825 S. Sohl Ave. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. General admission is $35. The action features fighters Jared "The Spider" McMahan and Ryan "The Butcher" Brown. Team Corral showcases a Brazilian jiu-jitsu, full contact fighting style. In celebration of the Thanksgiving season, New Beginning Outreach Ministries will hold its Third Annual Community Turkey Giveaway from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 22 at 2480 Broadway. Lora Cairo, a jewelry designer and exhibitor at Paul Henry's Art Gallery and Studios, will be offering a jewelry-making class at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 23 at the gallery, 416 Sibley St. This will be an adult beginner level class. Materials and tools will be provided and the gallery will offer refreshments. There will be space for up to 15 students; a $10 deposit is needed to reserve a spot. FESTIVAL OF TREES | Munster
Deadline for reservations is Nov. 24 for the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Festival of
Trees at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road. This always sold-out event is sponsored by the Women's Association of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Society. A seven-foot designer decorated holiday tree will be raffled at the gourmet luncheon. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Emerson School for Visual and Performing Arts Concert Choir and other activities are planned.

Crafters are being sought for the Lake Central Band Boosters' annual holiday craft fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 13 at Lake Central High School on U.S. 41. Nearly 2,000 visitors attended last year.
