CROWN POINT | Gary police officers will not face a schedule shake-up or pay cut this weekend after a Lake County judge issued a restraining order Friday against the administrative moves.

Lake Circuit Court Judge Lorenzo Arredondo issued a temporary restraining order Friday against a 20 percent pay cut for Gary officers, as well as a shift in work hours that may have hurt the department, Gary police union President Lt. Del Stout said.

"We're very pleased," Stout said.

Under the proposed shift change that was to begin Saturday, patrolmen would work four 12-hour days, with six off following them. Schedules now will remain as contracts stipulate, with patrolmen working five days on, followed by two off.

Stout criticized the schedule juggling, saying it ironically would result in the department paying increased overtime costs. The altered schedule also will hurt many officers who work other jobs to earn money, Stout said.

A planned pay cut -- which would reduce a starting officer's $39,303 salary by almost $8,000 -- also was to start in Saturday's pay period.

A hearing has been scheduled in the police union's case for 9 a.m. Monday in Arredondo's courtroom, Stout said.
