JAZZ, AUCTION | Chesterton

St. Agnes Adult Day Service Center will host a jazz and silent auction from 2 to 6 p.m. Aug. 24 at St. Pat's Trinity Hall. Food is being donated by Don Quijote, Old Style Inn, Popolano's and Fast Coffee, Tea & Dessert Company. Tickets are on sale now for $25 per person and there will be a cash bar. The afternoon will feature the Red Rose Ragtime Jazz Band, a seven-piece group from Chicago. Tickets can be purchased at the sponsoring restaurants, St. Agnes Adult Day Service Center, BRQ Printing, Stolpe Real Estate and Schoop's in Valparaiso. MOVIES ON THE SQUARE | Valparaiso

The Valparaiso Community Festivals & Events office will be hosting free outdoor movies on Aug. 12 beginning at dusk. The screen will be set up on Washington Street in front of Fifth Third Bank. The Porter County Museum on Indiana Street will be open for tours prior to the movie.

DONATIONS, VOLUNTEERS | Valparaiso

The Open Door Social Club is seeking donations of nonperishable food items, cleaning products, household and personal items, or money. The club, housed in the Margaret Stevens House, 402 E. Indiana Ave., is a program of Mental Health America of Porter County. Pantry items will be distributed to adults with mental illness who are living in the community. Volunteers also are needed for the Open Door Social Club. The group is looking for outgoing, encouraging and caring adults or groups to volunteer a few hours each month. The club offers activities and outings for adults with mental illness. The club meets from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Margaret Stevens House.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT | Portage

Dr. Michael Villanueva will offer Transitions Overview, a free overview on a long lasting weight management program from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at his new practice, Dependable Chiropractic, PC, 6062 Lute Road. Based on a low-glycemic food approach which has proven twice as effective as the top five common ‘diet' programs on the market today, the public is invited to this DVD presentation. PREVENT CHILD ABUSE | Valparaiso

Prevent Child Abuse Porter County's council will meet at 6:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at Porter County Administration Center, 155 Indiana Ave, Suite 309. Meeting dates are Aug. 11, Sept. 8, Oct. 13 (administration will be closed; location will be announced), Nov. 10 and Dec. 8.

BALLROOM DANCE | Valparaiso

DANCE LESSONS | Valparaiso

Just Us and Friends Line Dance Club is now holding beginner line dance lessons every Monday evening starting at 6 until 7 p.m. Lessons are taking place at the Valparaiso American Legion, 4 Monroe St. Classes are ongoing and geared to the student who has little or no experience in this type of dancing. Cost is $4 per student. No signup is necessary. Jack and Roxann Anderson will be instructing this class.

FIRE AUXILIARY COOKBOOK | South Haven

South Haven Fire Department Auxiliary has cookbooks featuring a collection of recipes from group members, family and friends available for sale. The cookbooks sell for $10, plus $4 for shipping and handling. They may be purchased from any member of the auxiliary or at South Haven Fire Department, 398 W. County Road 700 North. All proceeds will go to South Haven Fire Department Auxiliary and the community and department events the group sponsors throughout the year. The cookbook contains 200 well-loved recipes, including appetizers, main dishes and desserts.

QUILT GUILD | Valparaiso
