Wee Read | Steger

The Steger-South Chicago Heights Public Library, 54 E. 31st St., will host Wee Read for ages 2 and older with an adult at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 16. Stories and fun for young children with an adult.

Travel video | Homewood

Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will have a travel video with lunch at 10 a.m. Feb. 19. Travel across America to camp in 13 different locations in Utah, California and Hawaii. At noon, they will show "Forever Darling" starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Bring a bagged lunch - dessert and beverages will be served.

Coloring contest | Illinois

The 17th annual National Children's Dental Health Month Coloring Contest sponsored by the Illinois State Dental Society is currently under way. The contest is open to children in kindergarten through third grades and several prizes will be awarded in each category. Entry forms are available from participating members of the Illinois State Dental Society and at www.ISDS.org. No purchase is necessary to be eligible to participate or win.

This year's contest features the theme "Fight Tooth Decay 24/7!" The Illinois State Dental Society sponsors the coloring contest to remind children about the importance of oral health as a contributor to overall health. The coloring sheet features "Flossie," the Illinois State Dental Society mascot. Participants may use any medium they like to complete the entry form, including crayons, markers, paint and/or pencils. Entry forms must be returned to the Illinois State Dental Society at P.O. Box 376, Springfield, IL, 62705 and postmarked by Feb. 29. Winners will be notified by April 15.

Fish frys | Calumet City

Calumet Memorial Post 330 of the American Legion is inviting the public to its annual fish fry season. Doors open at 4 p.m. with food served until 7 p.m. Fridays through March 21 at the legion, 950 Legion Drive. They will serve cod, lake perch, shrimp and combo dinners. Meals include French fries, cole slaw, roll, dessert and coffee.

Tax prep | Lansing

Federal and state income tax returns will be prepared from noon to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Lansing Youth Center, 18123 Burnham Ave. The Youth Center doors will open no sooner than 11:50 a.m. AARP Tax Aide is the largest free volunteer-run tax preparation service for taxpayers with middle and low income, ages 60 and older. Membership in AARP is not required. Bring last year's return with you.

Baseball registration | Lansing

Lynwood Little League's baseball registration will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 16 at Nathan Hale Elementary School, 19055 Burnham Ave. in Lansing. To register, bring a copy of the child's birth certificate and two forms of proof of residency.

There will also be mandatory try-outs March 8 at Nathan Hale Elementary School. Try-outs are for registered players entering the minor and major league levels for the first time. The times are: 9 a.m. to noon for minor league, ages 7 to 9; and 1 to 3 p.m. for major league, ages 10 to 12.

Gospel music | South Holland

South Holland Public Library, 16250 Wausau Ave., will host Movin' On Up a Little Higher: The History of Gospel Music at 7 p.m. Feb. 21. Register. Professor Patricia Lessane will cover the history of gospel music from Mahalia Jackson to Kirk Franklin's "Stomp." This program is sponsored in part by the Illinois Humanities Council.

CHILI DINNER | Hammond

Sons of the American Legion Squadron will have an all-you-can-eat chili dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Feb. 20 at 6523 Kennedy Ave. Tickets cost $5. Proceeds will benefit the squadron's colors fund.

MAGIC SHOW | Highland

Carson Entertainment, a national touring company featuring the talents of Garry Carson and Kelsey Kara, will perform Feb. 17 in Monbeck Auditorium at Highland High School, 9135 Erie St. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. and the show is at 3 p.m. The act features exotic animals, audience participation, grand illusions, comedy and magic. Tickets cost $15 for adults, $10 for children 12 and younger and $50 for families. Proceeds will go to St. Vincent DePaul at Our Lady of Grace. Tickets are available by phone.

Animal campaign | Chicago Heights

South Suburban Humane Society is having a Frosty Feline Fix Campaign now through March 31. Vouchers will be available that will provide $25 cat or kitten spays/neuters. Low income households can receive vouchers for $10 spay/neuters. Proof is required. Rabies vaccines are required or can be purchased at time of surgery at owner's expense. Additional evaluation costs may apply per individual vet office policies. The shelter is at 1103 W. End Ave.
