Friday's accident second fatal on expressway in two days
LAKE STATION | A person sitting in a pickup truck on the shoulder of the Borman Expressway was killed early Friday morning when the truck was rear-ended by a semitrailer, police said.
Officers were called to the scene of an accident involving a semitrailer and a Dodge pickup truck at 3:18 a.m. on westbound Interstate 80/94 just west of Ripley Street.
The driver of the Dodge, Howard C. Marshall, 52, of Lombard, died at the scene, his body burnt beyond recognition after the truck burst into flames, Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Jeff Wells said.
Police said the Dodge was on the outer shoulder for unknown reasons when the semi went off the road and rear-ended it. The collision caused the Dodge to go across all three lanes of the expressway and hit the concrete barrier wall.
At some point, the Dodge burst into flames with the driver inside.
The driver of the semi -- Juan M. Guzman, 38, of Chicago -- was not injured in the incident. He was driving a 2000 Freightliner semitrailer owned by J & R Trucking, of Chicago, police said.
Police diverted traffic off the Borman and onto Ripley Street for several hours during the crash investigation and cleanup.
Indiana State Police reported that the Lake Station Fire Department, Indiana Department of Transportation Hoosier Helpers and the Lake County coroner's office assisted at the scene.
The accident followed another fatal accident on the expressway early Thursday. Yolandria Davis, 24, of Gary, was killed when her car hit a semitrailer on the westbound Borman just east of Cline Avenue at 4:31 a.m. Thursday, police said.
Her passenger, Larry Wroby, 29, of Gary, was listed in critical condition with a brain injury at Methodist Hospital's Southlake Campus in Merrillville on Thursday night.
A representative from the hospital said Friday afternoon she couldn't release any information about Wroby's condition because of patient confidentiality.
