GARY | A three-semi crash on the Borman Expressway near Broadway shut down all lanes but the shoulder for more than five hours early Thursday morning, state police said.

At 4 a.m., an International semitrailer was traveling east in the left center lane when traffic in front of the semi slowed, police said. The semi could not slow in time, and the driver, Mark Harmon, 45, of Elkhart, Ind., veered the truck to the left, slamming into a Freightliner semi hauling two trailers, police said.

The trailer on Harmon's semi split open, spilling 30,000 pounds of battery chargers and wrenches onto Interstate 80/94 and the Freightliner semi was pushed into a third Mack semitrailer. Harmon was later cited for following too closely and driving too fast to avoid a collision, police said.

Freightliner driver Ross Johnson, 44, of Akron, Ohio, who was not wearing his seat belt, suffered a large gash to his face and was taken to the Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary for treatment, police said.

Elias Martinez, 36, of Chicago, who was driving the Mack truck, was not injured.

All lanes eastbound were closed until 9:30 a.m. for removal of the vehicles, cargo and emergency transportation of Johnson, police said.
