CALUMET CITY

Cops pitted against the Bears in game

In order to raise money for a gang resistance education and training program, Calumet City police will play a game of basketball against some famous athletes, Calumet City police Investigator Marco Glumac said.

Past and current members of the Bears will play police at 7:30 p.m. March 31 at Thornton Fractional North High School in Calumet City, he said.

Glumac said although the competition will be fierce, he is confident in the department's athletic abilities.

"We are going to win," he said.

Tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased at the Calumet City Police Department. Residents can stop in and buy them at 1200 Pulaski Road.

ILLINOIS

Students encouraged to try for scholarship

State Rep. George Scully, D-Flossmoor, will accept applications for the 2007 General Assembly Scholarship program.

The scholarships, available to residents of the 80th district, will cover one year's tuition, including summer school, to University of Illinois schools, Chicago State University, Eastern Illinois University, Governors State University, Illinois State University, Northern Illinois University, Northeastern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University and Western Illinois University.

Fees, books, room and board are not covered.

All applications must be returned to Scully's district office by 5 p.m. March 16.

The 80th district includes all of Chicago Heights, South Chicago Heights, Crete, Steger, Sauk Village and parts of Beecher, Flossmoor, Glenwood, Lynwood, Lansing, Homewood, Olympia Fields, Park Forest and University Park.

Opponents of airport to meet today at Legion

The next meeting of Shut This Airport Nightmare Down will be 7 p.m. today at the Peotone American Legion Hall on 109 E. North Street.
