HOBART | A missing flue for a hot water tank seems to be the cause of a fatal carbon monoxide leak Saturday at a group home in Hobart.

Hobart Building Commissioner Carroll Lewis said the chimney for the hot water tank at Arc BRIDGES had not been properly secured and was missing.

The Saturday morning incident at 420 Crestwood Drive killed 55-year-old Toby Sandilla and sent six others to the hospital. Hobart Police Department officer Ryan Snedecor and Cpl. Thomas Autterson were released after treatment. Two Arc BRIDGES residents were released Sunday, according to a news release, and a staff member and another resident remained hospitalized Monday.

Sue Crisman, public relations director for Arc BRIDGES, said the residents have been placed in alternate housing and will return when repairs to the home are complete.

Arc BRIDGES will replace the water heater and heating and air conditioning system, according to its news release.

Staff members and families involved have received grief counseling, the release said.

Arc BRIDGES is a nonprofit organization serving people with developmental disabilities. It operates 29 state-licensed homes in the area.

Lewis said there were two carbon monoxide detectors in the home, but it is unclear whether they were working properly.

Lewis said the building would remain unoccupied until a contractor makes repairs and the city reinspects the property.

A representative of the Lake County coroner's office said reports from Sandilla's toxicology test and autopsy would not be available for at least a week.
