ST. JOHN | Lake Central will begin offering physical education in summer school this year to alleviate large class sizes during the normal school year and to allow students to satisfy their two-semester credit requirement for graduation.
Students will be able to complete their PE graduation requirements in one six-week period, said Tony Arini, director of instruction.
Two separate three-week sessions will be offered and scheduled in the morning.
The first session runs June 15 through July 6. The second session runs from July 9 through July 27.
Incoming freshmen will earn one semester credit per 15-day session. Students will be allowed 1 2/3 absences and tardies will count as one-third of an absence.
Mark Kinne, a local pediatrician who is on the district's medical committee, reviewed the program.
"He was pleased with the variety and diversity of the activities and the breaks in between the sessions," Arini said.
Activities include basketball, volleyball, badminton, softball, soccer, speedball, fitness/dance, yoga/aerobics, nutrition/diet, freestyle and backstroke swimming, survival skills, tennis, Frisbee golf and flag football.
Students will move through five different workout stations and have an 11-minute break between the rotations to move from area to area. A break is also included at the end of the day for water, showers and dressing.
Morning station times are 7:24-8:16; 8:27-9:19; 9:30-10:22; 10:33-11:25; and 11:36-12:28 p.m.
