THORNTON | The Village Board this week rejected a resolution in support of a casino in nearby Calumet City.

Trustees voted 4-1 against the measure, which would pave the way for Thornton to share part of Calumet City's revenue from casino taxes and fees.

Trustee Judy Diekelman expressed concern the Calumet City proposal would conflict with an earlier casino deal. She said Thornton already has an intergovernmental agreement with Rosemont for its failed casino project. If Rosemont eventually gets a casino, the village could be caught in the middle, she said.

Village Attorney Scott Dillner pointed out the resolution only voiced support for the Calumet City casino license and was not a binding agreement.

Calumet City is one of seven municipalities vying for the license and tied for the fourth highest bid. Other players include Rosemont, Waukegan, Harvey, Stickney, Des Plaines and Country Club Hills.

The 1893 Entertainment Group proposal in Calumet City includes the Columbian Exposition Casino & Entertainment Complex, a multi-use entertainment development next to Torrence Avenue and the Little Calumet River. It has proposed a 100,000-square-foot casino expected to create approximately 1,600 jobs and generate annual revenues approaching $325 million.

Calumet City has proposed a revenue-sharing agreement where 70 percent of gaming revenue would go to 27 municipalities.
