CROWN POINT | A Crown Point woman on Thursday pleaded guilty but mentally ill to trying to electrocute herself and her developmentally delayed daughter.

Sarah Pullum, 37, faces an agreed eight-year sentence.

During Pullum's June 6 sentencing hearing, defense and prosecuting attorneys will argue as to what type of sentence is imposed, according to the plea agreement.

Pullum initially was charged with attempted murder and neglect of a dependent. On Thursday, Pullum admitted that on May 30, 2005, she fed cereal laced with her antidepressant to her 6-year-old daughter.

Pullum then put water in the bathtub at her mother's house, put her daughter in the water and climbed in herself, both fully clothed.

She held a plugged-in curling iron above the water, intending to drop it and electrocute herself and her daughter, Pullum said Thursday.

Pullum's mother came into the bathroom and stopped her from carrying out the plan.

On Thursday, Pullum pleaded guilty but mentally ill to an amended charge of attempted battery. Pullum said she suffered from and was being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Pullum's daughter suffers from autism, delayed development and cerebral palsy, court records say.
