CROWN POINT

Gary man charged with unlawful possession of a firearm

A Gary man was charged Monday with felony unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, Lake County Criminal Court records show.

Gary police said they spotted Frederick Green, 49, walking with a gun in an alley in the 2100 block of Georgia Street.

According to court records:

Police told Green to put down the gun and lay down on the ground. While officers were handcuffing him, Green told officers he was going to kill someone. Police said they smelled alcohol on Green's breath.

Green told officers he did 20 years in prison. He was convicted in 1976 of felony robbery.

Learn to handle mass media at free workshop

Vocalo.org is hosting a free training in mass media from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Purdue University Calumet, 2200 169th St., Hammond, in the Powers Building, Room 120.

Participants will learn basics including recording and editing sound, licensing, selecting music and uploading different types of content. Participants also will practice with sound equipment and free software. By the end of the workshop, participants will be ready to submit audio to Vocalo.org.

Listeners can share their stories and opinions with the public by uploading content -- audio, video, text or pictures -- to Vocalo.org, which broadcasts live online and at 89.5 FM. It is a Web site and public broadcast outlet dedicated to fostering conversation among diverse residents across the Lake Michigan region -- Northwest Indiana, Chicago and southwest Michigan.

Purdue Cal alumni can attend finance program

Graduates of Purdue University Calumet's master's in business administration for executives program are invited to attend a finance and economics program at 6 p.m. Thursday at the university's Calumet Conference Center.

Paul McGrath, head of Purdue Calumet's department of finance and economics and professor of economics, will lead a presentation titled Globalization and the Financial Situation.

Church center to host railroad swap, sell meet

Ron Jackson's 19th Model Railroad Swap and Sell Meet is set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 6 at St. Bridget Parish Center, 101 Center St.

Reserve tables for $15. Admission is $3, with children 12 and under admitted free.

All proceeds go to the Hobart Fraternal Order of Police No. 121 vest fund.

Pop and sandwiches will be available to buy.

Town offers Christmas trees for sponsorship

The town of St. John is seeking Christmas tree sponsorships for its annual Christmas in the Park event.

Businesses, organizations and families can decorate a tree for $50 each. The trees will be displayed in Prairie West Park through New Year's Day.

Trees are 6 feet tall and come with white lights attached. They will be available for decorating Friday, which must be finished by Nov. 26. Applications and payment are due Friday. Space is limited.

Forms are available at www.stjohnin.com. Checks should be written to "The Town of St. John" and can be mailed to Town of St. John Clerk's Office, Christmas in the Park, 10955 W. 93rd Ave., St. John, IN 46373-8822.

Girl Scouts sell cookies to send to U.S. troops

Members of Girl Scout Troop 542 sold cookies Sunday at the First United Methodist Church, 352 S. Main St., and about 100 boxes were bought to send to troops overseas.

The church will host a celebration Sunday honoring families who have loved ones serving in the military. Services will be at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. For more information, call the church office at 663-1515.

Event to help seniors with medication plans

Northwest Indiana Community Action is holding a checkup and sign-up event to assist seniors with Medicare Part D annual open enrollment from 10:30 a.m. to noon Monday at NWICA Area One offices, 5240 Fountain Drive off of U.S. 30, south of Pine Island, east of Burr Street).

Part D open enrollment is from Saturday to Dec. 31. Current Part D participants, people enrolled in other medicine programs and those who have no medicine coverage are encouraged to get this program checkup. Given that programs change from year to year, they can have qualified Medicare and state health insurance assistants do an on-site personal evaluation.

If participants choose to change, they can complete the process at this event. They also may need to apply for extra help to pay the premiums. Reservations are required and available on a first-come, first-served basis by calling (219) 794-1829.
