PORTAGE: Only two members show up for revamped panel's Wednesday meeting
PORTAGE | For the second month in a row the Board of Examiners failed to garner a quorum for its regularly scheduled meeting.
And that had one of the two members who did show up for Wednesday night's meeting upset.
"We need to get people here who are going to come to the meetings," said Jeff Veach. The only other member of the seven-member board to attend was Building Commissioner Doug Sweeney.
The board, formerly known as the Board of Licensing and Registration, is responsible for licensing and testing contractors and deals with complaints filed by residents against contractors. Last year the city oversaw 1,070 licensed contractors.
For years the board met only periodically. This year, members said they wanted to meet on a regular basis to tackle some issues, including revamping testing procedures, reviewing ordinances and initiating contractor interviews. The board did begin gathering information on the issues earlier in the year and held a hearing involving a resident complaint, which initially had to be postponed because of the lack of a quorum.
Judy Alvey, board secretary, said board member and City Council member Liz Modesto was out of the area and board President Bob Mackovyak was ill. Mackovyak also had sent Alvey an e-mail saying he wanted to step down as president, but remain on the board, because of his illness. She had anticipated two other members showing up, but they did not. Other members of the board are Russell Hilton, Paul Mills and Glen Fingar.
Veach said he wanted to address the lack of attendance at meetings with Mayor Olga Velazquez. Board membership is made up of the building commission, a City Council representative, a City Council appointee and four mayoral appointees.
