OPPORTUNITY BOOKS | Valparaiso

The Valparaiso Lions Club has Golden Opportunity Books for sale for $25. The books have coupons for dining, entertainment and more. Proceeds will be used to improve the lives of vision-impaired residents and other projects.

Bingo | Gary

The Rosary Sodality of St. Joseph the Worker Croatian Church will host a bingo at 2 p.m. Sept. 7 in the church hall, 330 E. 45th Ave. Admission is $2 a person. Early bird bingo will start at 1:30 p.m. Refreshments will be available for purchase. All are welcome.

CARS & BIKES | Crown Point

A Benefit Car and Bike Show will be held Sept. 1 at Church of the Four Seasons, 9100 E. 109th Ave. Registration costs $20 and begins at 8 a.m., with awards presented at 3 p.m. Admission is $3, or $2 with a donated canned good. Kids' games, food, music included. Bean Bag Tournament starts at 11 a.m. with entry fee of $10 for an individual and $20 for a team. This year the proceeds will benefit Winfield-Porter Township Food Pantry, Bashor Children's Home, COFS Good Samaritan Fund and the Madison Dobrowski Fund.

Fish fry | Highland

Highland Elks Lodge 981 will have a fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 29 at 3120-45th St. It's $10 per person. Food includes all-you-can-eat deep fried whitefish or chicken strips. Meal includes cottage cheese, three-bean salad and beets.

FAMILY WALK-A-THON | Crown Point

Trinity Lutheran Church and School will hold a Family Walk-A-Thon from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 S. Court St. Registration begins at noon. Sponsored by the Trinity Day School Board, students are collecting pledges to raise funds for the school through the quarter-mile walk. The money earned will be divided equally among the teachers from each grade level to purchase classroom items. Family members and friends are invited to participate or cheer on their favorite walker.

Poker tourney | Homewood

SouthSTAR Services will host its eighth Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament Sept. 21 at Ravisloe Country Club, 18231 S. Park Ave. The doors open at 11:30 a.m. and the tournament will begin at 12:30 p.m. The cost for registered players is $100 and the cost for players at the door is $125. The tournament will include a raffle for a plasma TV, 50/50 raffle, a buffet, beverages, prizes and viewing of sports events.

Bowling fundraiser | Dyer

Bowl for Mason is from 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 6 at Stardust Bowl, 1330 Sheffield Ave. The event will raise funds for Mason Gilbert's ongoing medical needs. Mason, of Schererville, was born on May 30, 2008 with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. For a $50 donation(or $200 for a team of five), bowlers get three games, shoe rental, pizza, pop, and an event T-shirt. Pro Bowler Diandra Asbaty will be on hand to give bowling tips and sign autographs. There will also be a silent auction, door prizes and raffles.

LIGHT THE NIGHT | Crown Point

The Crown Point Beef 'O' Brady's is donating 15 percent of all sales from 4 to 8 p.m. today to this year's Northwest Light The Night Walk. Stop in to eat, buy a paper balloon or donating to the Beef 'O' Brady's team at 107th and Broadway. Light The Night is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual evening fundraising walk to build awareness of blood cancers and raise funds for cures. All proceeds support LLS's mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

STREET FAIR | Merrillville

Mill Health Campus is hosting a street fair from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 30 in hopes of raising $5,000 for its Memory Walk Team, a group of employees who will walk Sept. 30 in the Alzheimer's Association's Memory Walk at Hidden Lake Park in Merrillville. The street fair, at the facility at 101 W. 87th Ave., will feature a DJ, games for the kids, raffles, craft booths, food vendors and bingo. All proceeds will go to the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk.

Yard sale | Chicago

A community yard and tent sale fundraiser is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 4, 5 and 6 at 12852 S. Manistee Ave. in Chicago's Hegewisch neighborhood. The event will raise money for a child who has an inoperable brain tumor and other neurological issues. More than 30 families have donated items.

FASHION SHOW | Schererville

Humane Society of Northwest Indiana and Humane Society Calumet Area will hold their first fashion show for men and women at 2 p.m. Oct. 12 at Briar Ridge Country Club. Tickets are $75. Raffles will be held throughout the event, with the grand prize a SEGWAY valued at more than $6000. Sponsorships and program ads are available.

Golf outing | Glenwood

The 2008-09 South Suburban College Baseball Team is hosting its third annual Bulldog Baseball Golf Outing this October to raise funds for athletic equipment and travel costs for nationwide tournaments. It will take place Oct. 3 at Glenwoodie Golf Course on 193rd and State Street. Registration begins at noon with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The cost is $100 per golfer, which includes golf (four man scramble) with dinner and door prizes to follow. Hole sponsorships are also available for $100.

Steak fry | South Holland

New Hope Center is holding its annual steak fry Sept. 7 at Holy Ghost Gymnasium, 700 E. 170th St. Food will be served between noon and 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 each, and will be on sale at New Hope Center's Main Campus, 1624 E. 154th St. in Dolton.
