CROWN POINT | Donald Eriks was sentenced Tuesday to 14 years in prison for setting fire to his ex-fiancee's Hammond home, Lake County Criminal Court records show.

The 46-year-old Portage man pleaded guilty last month to felony arson in exchange for Lake County prosecutors dropping seven other felony charges against him, all of which related to allegations he harassed his ex-fiancee.

Eriks lit his ex-fiancee's home on fire June 20, 2007, court records say. Authorities said he left two recorded messages on her answering machine that day saying he would kill her and nobody would be able to protect her.

The house fire was started in three locations -- the living room, basement and a bedroom. When interviewed by Hammond police, Eriks said: "I'm already going to jail. I set her house on fire, and I burnt up all her papers," court records say.

The woman told police she broke up with Eriks in late 2006, and he began harassing her at work. Eriks ransacked her office and tormented her and her mother, court records say.

Eriks, 46, was arrested June 19 in San Diego, said Diane Poulton, spokeswoman for the Lake County prosecutor's office. He was extradited to Lake County to face charges.

Lake County prosecutors dismissed three felony counts of stalking, two counts of intimidation and one count each of burglary and battery at sentencing, according to the plea agreement.

The 14-year sentence was an agreed term with prosecutors.
